The Chikungunya virus is transmitted to human through the Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus mosquitoes. You only get infected when a mosquito with chikungunya bites you. Currently, there is no cure but rather treatment to manage the symptoms.

This virus usually develops from three to seven days after you’ve been bitten by it. But in some cases, it could be two or twelve days.

Chikungunya is not contagious; you can’t pass it to someone else either by sneezing or coughing, only through an infected mosquito

Those with certain health conditions, such as heart disease, high blood pressure, and diabetes, can have severe complications from the virus. Older adults and newborns are not left out.

Symptoms

The most common symptoms are fever and joint pain, which could be mild and be mistaken for another illness. However, it could also be intense depending on the person involved. Other symptoms are:

1. Rash.

2. Nausea.

3. Headache.

4. Muscle Pain.

5. Swollen joints.

6. Fatigue

Treatment

Chikungunya’s treatment is focused on managing the symptoms. You can feel better within one week, but some could go on for months or years, especially joint pain. Your treatment could be drinking plenty of fluids, taking acetaminophen for pain, or getting lots of rest.

There are also vaccines developed for this virus by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA). They are:

1. Ixchiq

This is a vaccine made from a weakened chikungunya virus. Its infection is mild in such a way that a healthy immune system can control it. Ixchiq can only be used by people aged 18 and older.

 Vimkunya

This vaccine is also made from the virus. It allows the immune system to get ready to protect the body. From age 12 and older can use it.
